Q. Last weekend I helped a neighbor with a small construction project and my ears "rang" for three days. Is that common when using power tools?

Schmitt_Web.jpgA. Thee is a relationship between noise and the duration of the exposure to the noise that dictates how damaging the exposure can be. Anytime one experiences ringing there has been potential for permanant damage. The unprotected ear can safely be around 85 decibles(dB) of sound pressure level for 8 hours. With every 5 dB increase in sound the safe time limit is cut in half. For example, 4 hours of safe time for 90dB, 2 hours for 95dB, ect. For comparision, average conversation is about 60dB, a lawn mower is 95dB, a chain saw is 105 dB and a rock band can be in excess of 120 dB. If you are around loud noise you should have your hearing tested and discuss your noise exposure with an audiologist. If you have ringing in your ears, call to schedule and appointment.
